emo!
My roommate Sam and I got into a discussion of what makes a band "emo".

For instance, Jimmy Eat World got labeled as such after their "Bleed American" album...which actually was the center of our discussion.

Sam didn't think having emotional lyrics, like being torn up about a girl, made a band emo.

I agreed, but compared to previous decades of music, where having women at your knees was glamorized, this was emo.

But in the same vein, any sad song about a lover could be emo...hell, there's some Fleetwood Mac songs that are pretty sad, but that doesn't make them emo.

And there's songs from other indie/alternative groups like Bright Eyes and Elliot Smith that tear at heart strings...but they're not emo.

Hmm.  Arguing with myself through this, I bet it's the dichotomy between upbeat music and poignant lyrics makes a band emo.

And it probably has to do something with the scene the music is in....

I disagree with the Sam. If that's ALL they write about, they are emo. But emo doesn't have to equal garbage. Me and the critics luvers Say Anything and they are, without any arguement, an emo band. Bright Eyes is emo but because he too is a critical darling, so the label doesn't hurt him as much.

You guys just seem concerned because emo basically means garbage, which isn't totally true.

It's impossible to describe exactly what "emo" is these days. The label is thrown at so many bands and many of them have very little in common. In many cases, the term has simply been attached to them because of musical similarities, a common fashion sense, or because of the band's popularity within the "emo" scene, not because the band adheres to emo as a music genre.

Ok, so that last bit I stole from Wikipedia, but I couldn't have put it better myself.
